Yes, the Petroleum Regulatory Agency Sierra Leone has reduced fuel pump prices from 30 NLE to 28.50 NLE; new prices to come into effect from 1st July 2024.

SLAJ-iVerify has fact-checked a viral press release that surfaced on social media claiming that the Petroleum Regulatory Agency had reduced fuel prices to 28.50 NLE from 30 NLE and found it to be true.

Claim

“Fuel Price Reduction effective immediately find attached Press Release of the PETROLEUM REGULATORY AGENCY -SIERRA LEONE” a press release on social media claims.

Rating Justification

A press release that carried the logo and nomenclature of the Petroleum Regulatory Agency appeared on social media claiming that fuel pump prices have been reduced to 28.50 NLE from 30 NLE. SLAJ-iVerify has found this claim to be true.

To reach this conclusion, SLAJ-iVerify undertook the following steps:

Firstly, SLAJ-iVerify checked the official Facebook page of the Petroleum Regulatory Agency and found the same press release that was being widely shared on social media.

SLAJ-iVerify also saw the same Press Release on the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s official Facebook page confirming its accuracy.

The Press Release states, “Meanwhile, since the last review in March 2024, the international oil prices for petrol, diesel, kerosene and fuel oil declined marginally by 2.20%, 6.14%, 3.59% and 1.83% respectively. The USD/SLL also remained relatively flat averaging 0.54% appreciation. Accordingly, the approved pump prices for July 2024 are as follows ‘NLe’: PETROL 28.50, DIESEL 28.50, KEROSENE 27.40, FUEL OIL 25.30

These prices come into effect at midnight of 30th June 2024 and shall remain in effect until revised by the Petroleum Regulatory Agency.”

Based on these, SLAJ-iVerify has concluded that the claim that fuel pump prices have been reduced to 28.50 NLE among others is true.
