SLAJ-iVerify has fact-checked a viral claim appearing in form of a screenshot that is being attributed to an international media (The New York Times) that former President of Sierra Leone Ernest Koroma is to face ICC soon.

According to our verification, it appears the screenshot social media message was fabricated and generated through an Artificial Intelligence software. As a result, we have found same to be false.

A widely circulated social media image that is being attributed to the front page of an international media (The New York Times) carries the picture of former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma with the caption on the top left corner “Former President Koroma to face ICC soon”. SLAJ-iVerify has verified the claim and found it to be false. To reach this conclusion, SLAJ-iVerify undertook the following steps:

Firstly, SLAJ-iVerify contacted the office of the former president Ernest Bai Koroma, and spoke with the ex-President’s Personal Assistant, Ismail Sheriff, who told us that the claim was false.

SLAJ-iVerify further analyzed the picture that is being attributed to The New York Times newspaper and found significant discrepancies compared to the layout or style of the authentic front page of The New York Times as seen on its official website. Given these graphical and editorial difference, the screenshot social media picture being attributed to the The New York Times newspaper is nothing, but a skillful production or architecture of an artificial intelligence software or device.

Furthermore, SLAJ-iVerify also conducted a verification process using some of its fact-checking and image verification software and websites which showed that the screenshot was AI generated. Our tools revealed that the image was initially manipulated in Photoshop and later modified using an AI image generating tool.

Following all of the above steps and verification processes, SLAJ iVerify concludes that the claim suggesting that Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma will be facing the ICC soon is false.
