No, the claim that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has discovered All People’s Congress Party (APC) Head Office not paying for electricity since 2007 is false.

SLAJ-iVerify has fact-checked the claim that ACC has discovered that the APC Head Office has not paid for electricity since 2007 and found it to be false.

Claim

“BREAKING NEWS: The ACC has just discovered that the building housing APC Head Offices along Old Railway Line in Freetown has not paid for electricity since 2007. It is estimated that money owing as at10/05/2024 is Le 2, 500,000,000 (two billion, five hundred million). This huge amount must be paid on or before 10th June 2024, or the building will be seized and converted to a market place. Keep tuned as this is a developing scenario.”

Rating Justification

A claim circulating on social media as ‘Breaking News’ claims ACC has just discovered that the building housing APC Head Offices along Old Railway Line in Freetown has not paid for electricity since 2007. The post estimates that money the party is owing as of 10/05/2024 is Le 2, 500,000,000 (two billion, five hundred million). According to the claim, APC is required to pay the money before 10th June 2024, or else the building will be seized and converted to a market place.

SLAJ-iVerify has fact-checked the claim and found it to be false.

To arrive at this conclusion, SLAJ-iVerify contacted the ACC and the APC Party.

ACC Director of Public Education and External Outreach, Patrick Sandy, said the Commission is not handling such a case and they have not heard of the claim. Likewise, the APC Secretary General, Lawyer Lansana Dumbuya described the claim as “100 percent false!”

On the 15th of May, the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) put out the press statement listing institutions owing electricity bill. But APC was not mentioned in the press statement, which is also a indication that the claim against the Party is false.
